Mental health and substance use is an important workplace issue

BC continues to be in a public health crisis due to the toxic drug supply. This crisis impacts all aspects of our lives, including at work.

Many individuals who die from overdoses also face mental health challenges, and many turn to substances as a way to cope with life's stresses. People working in the trades are overrepresented in overdose fatalities.

“Research shows that specialized training and support
for union representatives and employers, particularly
those workers in supervisory roles, can be effective
in addressing knowledge gaps and fixed beliefs about
mental illness or substance use issues. These measures
are instrumental in the development and maintenance
of a workplace culture that supports worker health.”
— Supporting recovery through return to work, 2020
